Have you every really looked at what we are feeding our children?  I know we all start off with the best intentions. We make sure they have a well-balanced meal.  We make sure they eat their veggies, fruits and protein.  Then they start attending playgroups and play dates and from there nursery school and kindergarten and so on. It is here they are introduced to all the crap treats that are processed. Packaged cheese its, cookies, Twinkies, crackers, gummy fruit treats. All made to look very appealing to a Childs eye.

Just maybe if we all kept eating like civilization wanted us to eat, in the paleoethic way from the beginning then can you imagine how healthy we may all be?  You hear about all these children developing allergies on so many different levels.  We hear about Lactose intolerance, Peanut allergies and then there is digestive issues.

An allergy is a problem caused when  antibodies in your immune system mistakenly think that a harmless substance (like pollen or cat hair) is actually dangerous. Trying to defend your body, these  antibodies trigger the release of histamine, which provokes an inflammatory response to get rid of the “threat.”  On the other hand, some allergies cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis – peanut allergies are so notoriously severe that several schools have banned peanuts altogether. When we start introducing all these processed ingredients to our systems we are actually compromising how our system is suppose to work effectively. Because these fake foods do not have all the vitamins that are needed on a daily basis.

Now there are foods eaten on the paleo diet that can also be problematic as well if your FODMAP intolerant.  “FODMAP’s( “Fermentable, Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols“),  are short chain carbohydrates and monosaccharides that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, including fructans, galactans, fructose and polyols.   All I know is the restriction of FODMAPs from the diet has been found to have a beneficial effect for sufferers of irritable bowel syndrome and other functional gut disorders.”   The foods high in FODMAPs include certain kinds of fruit (apples, mango, pears, and watermelon), milk, and some vegetables (like asparagus, broccoli, and onions).

So having said this, if we were to feed our children Fresh veggies and fruits and the best quality meats, fish and poultry. And then we made them healthy snacks with natural ingredients in them, then maybe it would be easier to diagnose all the many allergies or G.I problems  that are out there. Or better yet these intolorences possibly wouldn’t occur.   When we are feeding our children processed ingredients many of which we do not even know how to pronounce or we don’t even know what they are capable of doing to our body, it is hard to figure out where to start the elimination process to find the lil culprit.  At the very least if we are feeding them natural ingredients we know what those are and it may be easier to start with a simple process of elimination. For instance we know that the most common intolerances are;

  1. Gluten (Celiac disease or non-celiac gluten intolerance);
  2. Dairy (lactose intolerance or casein intolerance);
  3. Fructose (fructose malabsorption or fructose intolerance);
  4. Food additives (preservatives, food coloring, etc.);
  5. Salicylates (salicylate sensitivity);
  6. FODMAPs (FODMAPs intolerance);
  7. Sulfites (sulfite sensitivity);

Again, if we start our children off not eating gluten, dairy, high fructose, food additives etc. Then maybe they will be less likely to end up with severe issues.

There has been controversy over not giving our children dairy, we are told we need calcium to build our bones.  While this is absolutely true there are other ways we can give our children the calcium they need. For instance, make some bone broth. It takes minutes to boil up some bones and produce a broth. This broth can be used in soups, and recipes.  Did you know that pasteurized dairy carries  a number of potential health risks?  Many people, often who don’t even realize it, have a dairy intolerance. Pasteurized dairy can be particularly problematic because it lacks the enzymes and nutrients that we as humans need to properly digest the dairy product.  Did you also know that dairy products could also spike insulin levels? This could have a negative affect on weight gain.

Here is a list of other ways to get your kids the calcium they need;

  1.  leafy green vegetables
  2.  collards
  3.  spinach
  4.  arugula
  5. broccoli
  6.  acorn squash
  7.  sweet potatoes

Now its important to make sure that you give your children enough carbs as they need the energy and endurance to be kids. Sweet potatoes, squash,  potatoes (yes, I said potatoes), and plenty of fruit will be your kids’ friends. How much of all of those things really depends on your kid, but I’d shoot for a couple pieces of fruit a day and a small serving of sweet potatoes or one of the other starchy veggies.

I can only offer information,  insight or my own opinions regarding the information that I have researched.  If you research all the good that paleo has to offer your body and you start researching all the ailments, digestive issues even ADHD that have been  decreased or eliminated from eating a paleoethic way you will understand why I am so excited about it.
